ExxonMobil's Defining Role
ExxonMobil has placed Guyana at the centre of its global deepwater strategy. Four FPSOs — Destiny, Unity, Prosperity, and Yellowtail — now operate in the Stabroek Block, tapping into more than 11 billion barrels of recoverable resources. This shift elevated GDP per capita from under $7,000 in 2020 to more than $20,000 by 2023, with further growth ahead. Oil now makes up over 70% of national exports.
A Nation Recognised
With revenues rising, the government has expanded investment in infrastructure, public services, and poverty reduction. International institutions — including the IMF and World Bank — have repeatedly named Guyana the world's fastest-growing economy.
Promise and Precaution
Projections suggest production could reach 1.3 million barrels per day by 2027 and up to 1.7 million by 2030, positioning Guyana among the highest oil producers per capita worldwide. Yet the path forward requires balance: diversifying the economy, managing new wealth responsibly, and strengthening institutions to avoid the familiar risks of resource-driven growth.

Alongside energy, tourism is gaining momentum. Visitor arrivals hit 371,000 in 2024 (up 16.3%) and grew another 18% in early 2025. Domestic tourism expanded by nearly 50%, reflecting a broader appetite for local experiences.
